This two-part workshop gives students a chance to discover the world of shadow theatre and then apply their new knowledge in a practical session.<\/p>\n

During the first workshop, depending on time allotted and the teacher\u2019s wishes, the puppeteer will showcase the wide range of expressions possible using shadow theatre by looking at video excerpts. We will look at traditional shadow theatre, including silhouettes, body shadow theatre and recent contemporary shadow theatre offerings. At the end of the workshop, participants will better understand what shadow theatre does best and what topics are best suited for it.<\/p>\n

The rest of the period is spent actively exploring and playing with different principles of body shadow theatre: changes in perspective, deformations, a slower pace, transformation through disguise, the zone of invisibility, and various possible textures.<\/p>\n

In the second workshop, the puppeteer will introduce participants to one of Jean de la Fontaine\u2019s fable. Participants must then set to work building a scene then performing it with characters of their own creation. Teams of 4 or 5 students will have 50 minutes to invent characters and a set, and then stage the fable. For the rest of the workshop, teams will present the results of their work with the whole class and receive feedback on their work.<\/p>\n

Must be able to hang a large white curtain with space in front and behind it so the group can try shadow theatre.<\/p>\n

Workshop 2:<\/h4>\n

Setup time (or help) is necessary before the activity to set up screens and lights for each team and after the activity to clean up the space.<\/p>\n
